"David and Jonathan"
" Any love that is dependent on something-when the thing ceases, the love also ceases.
But a love that is not dependent on anything never ceases".
What is [an example of] a love that is dependent on something?
The love of Amnon for Tamar. And one that is not dependent on anything?
The love of David and Jonathan." (Chazal in Mishna Avot 5:16)
David and Jonathan represent the highest value of friendship, heavenly connection.
Jonathan who was naturally destined to inherit the throne from his father, Shaul, does an unexpected and extremely noble move and gives up his place for his good friend David, all in the name of friendship and love.
This is a summary of good.
The ability to concede and to avoid pride.
In the painting you can clearly see differences between the figures and their closeness and touch.
They face each other the same way as the two Cherubs (angels) on the Ark of the Covenant when they were facing each other as a signal of peace.
